I saw a trailer for a new movie coming out that spooked me and took me back to something scary from 20 years ago: The Mist by Stephen King.

The plot is classic Stephen King – something unknown and unseen is scaring the bejeebers out of the townfolks. In this case, it’s creatures hidden in a mist after a terrible storm.

Twenty years ago, my father owned a boat and we’d go fishing off the Homosassa River. Boaters in Florida know that you can see a thunderstorm coming from miles away, and you need to head in to shelter because those suckers can move fast. In this case, it was winter and there was no storm. We were fishing on an overcast day.

An overcast day on the water just looks gray. At some point, we found ourselves enveloped in a foggy mist without realizing it even happened. We were only 10 miles or so from the mouth of the river, but we could see no landmarks, not even the sun. We turned on the Loran and pointed the bow towards a waypoint, but we could literally not see 6 feet away from the boat, In addition, we couldn’t hear anything because of the motor.

Unlike the movie where creatures attack people, we had to look out for inorganic monsters – other boats. We knew there were other boats on the water, and the only way to get back tot he river was a narrow channel cut through very shallow water. We were reasonably confident in the Loran to keep us out of the shoals, but we knew that channel could very well be filled with people like ourselves.

What’s the solution of father’s everywhere in this situation?

Send the oldest out on the bow to watch and listen for danger.

Thanks Dad.

It was a terrifying 2 hour crawl to make it those 10 miles. But, obviously, we did it. Remind me to tell you about the time my brother and I got caught 30 miles out in a thunderstorm with an engine that wouldn’t go above 1200 RPMs.

So?

Those NY-ers that aren’t already living here soon will be. And this guy needs some support, so check out the drawing of the girl of his dreams. Maybe you know who she is – a family member, a friend, someone you worked with before you dropped the stapler on your foot and filed for 100% disability and moved to Florida.**

Said he’d fallen through a roof and landed on his back while working as a carpenter. Didn’t keep him from deep sea fishing, though.

My family and I love traveling. My girls are exactly the right age for theme parks, and we like to take them on trips to various places in Florida instead of always buying “stuff” – give the experience and memory, you know?

With the holidays coming up later in the year, we’re having to start planning now. We already have a Disney trip planned, but except for one trip to the Keys with their mother, they’ve never seen South Florida and the Everglades, where I spent a lot of my childhood. If we decide to head down there at some point, the Viator coupons are going to a way we can find a reasonable price. Of course, a trip like that is going to require some new duds, so a check of Dick’s Sporting Goods coupons is going to be necessary for fishing outfits and gear.

Where can I find all these coupons and deals? Coupon Chief.

Um, this wasn’t deep sea fishing – they caught this OFF THE DOCK!

A big catch that has neighbors talking!St. Petersburg, Florida — Last Summer, Frank Maloney and his friends got hooked on fishing off his dock. They never thought they would catch something this big.

Maloney called for help and his friends knew this was not just a normal catch.

It took three hours of reeling to bring in a 600 pound, 9 foot long bull shark. Neighbors started gathering to see the shark. Many were stunned to see such a big shark in someone’s backyard.

The shark will be mounted on Maloney’s wall. The fisherman used a six-pound Bonita for bait and an 80 pound test line to catch the shark.

My brother and several friends were lifeguards at the beach. They said they used to see sharks all the time from up in their chairs, and swimmers were never aware. They just watched to make sure the sharks didn’t move in – usually they were just passing by.

Think about that on your next trip to the beach.
