Sending my wife good thoughts
I wrote a guest post on my wife’s blog: When the cat is away, the mice will guest post
She’s having a minor medical procedure Wednesday morning and is a bit miserable due to a combination of not getting pain medications and ingesting high-powered laxatives.
Of course, I tried to show my soft, sensitive side in the guest post. No really, when your normal conversations go something like “stop it!” and “don’t touch that!” or “get a REAL job!”, I suppose I did ok.
A Romantic New Yorker! Who Knew?
Yes, I know this is a Florida blog. Yes, I know this is a NY-centric post.
So?
Those NY-ers that aren’t already living here soon will be. And this guy needs some support, so check out the drawing of the girl of his dreams. Maybe you know who she is – a family member, a friend, someone you worked with before you dropped the stapler on your foot and filed for 100% disability and moved to Florida.**

** I met my brother for beers one afternoon and he introduced me to two friends who had moved from New York in recent in years. I automatically asked which one was on disability, because every other New Yorker I meet down here is on disability. The guy who was on disability got offended. Said he’d fallen through a roof and landed on his back while working as a carpenter. Didn’t keep him from deep sea fishing, though.
Who knew? God likes to play hoops!
So, it’s been a few months, I think, since I wrote about church. Don’t worry this isn’t about religion. There is a difference, you know.
(Again, for those that don’t know my opinion on discussions of religion and God and whether he exists or not, allow me to tell you: It’s none of your business. I am not evangelical in any way, shape, manner or form. I don’t go to your blog and try to change your opinion, don’t try to change mine.)
So, I’m in church this morning, wrangling the young ‘uns because I take the kids by myself about 95% of the time because my wife works most Sunday mornings answering incoming sales calls for Home Shopping Network – yes, it’s a stay-at-home job and you can find out about it from her. Also, I’m pretty sure she’s a heathen.
Anyway, the youngest is 5, so it’s really like herding cats for an hour and a half. This particular priest normally tries really hard to inspire the flock, but often it comes across like he’s trying to inspire himself. In this case, the parish is in the midst of a capital campaign, which I think other churches would call “The Building Fund” so he was reading from a script because apparently $1.4M isn’t enough just yet.
Of course, I tune out. I made up my mind long ago to limit my support to just my weekly envelope. I’m in no position to help, and when I inquired at the church’s school when I moved here 18 months ago about need-based and merit-based scholarships, I was told there weren’t any, so I don’t see the point in supporting expanding a school that won’t accept my kids because I can’t pay the tuition and they have a waiting list.
Shut up, it’s perfectly logical to me.
Anyway, in the midst of my kid-wrangling, I’m brought back to the moment by this little nugget from the mouth of a Catholic priest:
“… because the Lord needs a new parish activity center with a gymnasium.”
Excusemewhat?
Really, Catholic guilt works much better. Let’s leave the concept that we know which worldly goods the Lord wants us to have to the Protestants down at the Church-of-What’s-Happening-Now.
Just tell me what I don’t deserve to have.
National Memory Screening Day is November 13
I’ve written on other blogs about my personal interest in Alzheimer’s. I’ll spare you the long saga because I’ll have Alzheimer’s by the time you finish reading it, but in a nutshell, my grandmother spent the last 15 years of her life with this dread disease, and my aunt spent the best years of her life as a caregiver.
We watch Alzheimer’s news closely in our family, and I wanted to share with you that November 13 is National Memory Screening Day. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America started National Memory Screening Day in 2003 to encourage people to get checked because early detection is a key to preventing the onset of Alzheimer’s for as long as possible. Advancements in treatments have made it possible to delay, but not cure, Alzheimer’s so it is important to get checked.
Of course, what would the Florida Sun Dog blog be without providing the information to help Floridians find a place to get screened? Just follow the link to Florida memory screenings. While most places are doing the screenings on November 13, there are dozens of Kmart pharmacies that are doing them on November 16, so you have a couple chances to get checked in a convenient location.
If you want to everything you can to keep your brain healthy, check out the Aging Tips, and get screened.
In honor of “Talk Like A Pirate” day

You’re the pirate everyone else wants to throw in the ocean — not to get rid of you, you understand; just to get rid of the smell. Like the rock flint, you’re hard and sharp. But, also like flint, you’re easily chipped, and sparky. Arr!

‘cueing with the bloggers
I made the trip down to Brooksville this weekend to see the family and eat red meat with bloggers. Colleen and her husband, Jim, served up some damn tender steak and tasty corn on the cob, complemented by the Fabs‘ potato salad and my contribution, Sonny’s baked beans, for which I broke into Sonny’s and slaved over for hours early in the morning.
Cheryl brought presents for Fab and me, and I have to admit, my heart skipped a beat when I saw the bag:
But when I saw what was inside the bag, I got REALLY excited!
Yeah, baby, the Cap’n is HOT! And the Pez is the BOMB! I’m gonna have some good eatin’ for for breakfast tomorrow.
I wanted to bring one of my daughter’s to meet Colleen’s kids and I’m sorry she backed out at the last minute because those are great kids, very well-behaved and remarkably insightful.
Of course the evening was topped off when our Florida Gators whupped the collective asses of the Tennessee Volunteers, 59-20. Those of you NOT from Florida probably can’t understand the pure satisfaction of being able to walk into a convenience store and greet a total stranger with "Go Gators" rather than the obligatory half-grin-and-nod-and-mumble.
See, Florida is the place to be: great friends, great food, and great football.
I need a little Good News today
Girl, 8, donates birthday money to family of murdered BSO deputy
Only in FLA: 100 year old man’s DNA strewn all over the room
If you’re not related to this Florida man with 100 grandchildren, don’t worry – your grandchildren’s grandchildren will be. This is one fertile dude!
I could have 10 kids, but my wife and I have only had sex something like 6 times, so the math just hasn’t worked out.
What? Math isn’t my problem?
Setting up a corporation?
About half of my family are small business owners – small in the sense that they’re basically family-owned, but at least one is a multi-million-dollar business and another is well on it’s way.
I’m also dipping my toes in the water with these blogs o’ mine. I’ve been asking a lot of questions, trying to figure what the best business structure would be for someone like me. The one thing everyone I speak with is in agreement about is that an LLC is probably best, at some point in time. Mr. Fab over at pointless-drivel.com has written that he’s ready to take the plunge.
I don’t have the patience to figure out the filing process to incorporate in Florida. But, I know an attorney will charge me more than he’s worth, and more than I can afford, to do what is actually simple for someone knowledgeable about the process.
Enter a company like IncParadise.com, who will file all of your Florida corporation documents for $137. They are a Nevada corporation that can take care of filing articles of incorporation in every state. The fee schedule for every state is available on their website, so if you’re looking for a service like this, all of the information is available on their website.
Girl Tries to Flee Hurricane on Her Bike
A little girl flees hurricane Dean on her bike? Yes, it’s true.
In Deland, police stopped a girl who had been missing for some time and was last seen riding her bike. When questioned, she told them she was scared about Hurricane Dean hitting Florida and was riding back home to Ohio, where the family had recently come from.
How sad is this? We’ve scared the poor the children here in Florida sooo much that she tried to leave pedaling her little bike out of the state.
