Why do I love Florida, Jacksonville, the Jaguars?

I don’t know, what could it be…

God, I miss Jacksonville…

Time to give Fred Taylor his due

Without much hype or countdown outside of Jacksonville, Fred Taylor reached a milestone equaled by only 21 other men in the history of the world: 10,000 NFL rushing yards.

To give you some perspective on this accomplishment, here’s some numbers:

Number of people to climb Mt. Everest: @ 660

Ok, I’m too lazy to go find more numbers. But that one makes the point pretty well, doesn’t it?

Anyway, for a guy tagged with the nickname “Fragile Fred” early in his career, he’s certainly proven dependable and productive. Plus, he’s a Florida Gator, so there’s that, too.

Finally, did you know Fred Taylor has never been to the Pro Bowl? Such is the result of playing in the AFC. Had he been a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, he’d have led the NFC in rushing a number of times and been a perennial pro-bowler. While it is debatable that he’ll have the numbers this season, he’s shown a tremendous amount of professionalism in providing leadership to a young running back corps for the Jaguars, including another possible pro-bowler, Maurice Jones-Drew. For this reason, as well as his career accomplishments, y’all need to get over and vote for Fred Taylor for the Pro Bowl.

You Gators – this is mandatory. You Seminoles and ‘Canes – show some class and give credit where credit is due, unlike with your test grades.

DunceGrandpa Picks Up Wrong Kid From School

My in-laws pick the kids up from various functions all the time. I can’t imagine this ever happening. Is this guy blond, or just so out of touch with his grandchildren that he doesn’t even know them?

Please Mom, get him to an eye doctor, then introduce him to his grandchildren.

But, the workers that released the wrong kid! The school district said they’re going to be disciplined. I hope that discipline involves firing and reporting them to the authorities for child endangerment. They were lucky the grandfather was “normal” and not some sex predator. LUCKY!

Following up on whether or not there is a McDonald’s Monopoly game winner in Jacksonville: There is not.

But you knew that already, right?

It was Park Place. Hey, what did you expect from the state with hanging chads?

We’re making our Halloween plans, figuring out where the best candy will be. There’s a nice neighborhood up the road that has a killer feature: The house of one of the guys that run the Robot Costume company. Last year’s display was awesome, scared the bejeebers out of the kids!

Here’s a link to an article in last year’s paper about their home.

Yeah, we’re those people – the ones that don’t live in your neighborhood but bring their kids around at Halloween. Busted. In our defense, though, we live back in the woods, no streetlights, houses set way back and far apart. Just not safe for the kids, and it kind of creeps me out at night, too.

Hanging ChadFrom the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville, where Recount, a movie about the 2000 election, is being filmed:

OVERHEARD

Don’t know much about recent history

Two 20-somethings chatting in a San Marco bakery earlier this week.

First guy: They’re filming some stuff for that HBO movie Recount today.

Second guy: Yeah, I saw the crew working on signs. Why are they setting up so much stuff to make it look like everything is happening in Palm Beach?

Is there a Jacksonville winner in McDonalds’ Monopoly contest?

My coworker is telling me her neighbor has the Boardwalk piece to McDonalds’ Monopoly game at her office She apparently is thinking Park Place is the hard piece to get and is offering my coworker a chance to split the prize.

I think she’s mistaken and has Park Place. Hell, I have 2 Park Place pieces.

More on this later, I think someone can’t freakin’ read…

Anderson Cooper was in Jacksonville this weekend for a fundraiser for Wolfson’s Childrens Hospital. Single women and gay men were all atwitter. Married men made their wives cancel their "night out with the girls".

I don’t get it. Yeah, he’s rich, famous, and good-looking… oh, ok, I get it.

We are a fickle sports town, aren’t we Jacksonville?

Several weeks ago I wrote that "winning solves sports marketing problems". This past weekend, the 3-1 Jaguars played the Houston Texans and Jacksonville suffered through another blackout because of ticket sales. Some local reporters and broadcasters were aghast that there was a blackout for a 3-1 team. They kept pointing out how cheap the Jags tickets are compare to the rest of the league, but missed how expensive they are compared to groceries and gasoline.

They may also have forgotten that this is the Jaguars, who were supposed to wipe the field with the Texans twice last season and instead lost twice and missed the playoffs.

And really, the next reporter that sneers and suggests we should buy tickets just because this is the NFL will get the Florida Sun Dog "Douchebag Award". Sue us for feeding our kids and paying our bills. Jerkoffs.

However, the Jags got the job done over the weekend. In the process, they showed that they had the mental toughness they lacked last year, overcoming early mistakes and going on to dominate. This looks like a playoff team.

Next up on the schedule is the Colts on Monday night, a game that was going to sell out anyway. You can’t really draw any conclusions about ticket sales until the Chargers come to town on November 18, during which time the Jags will play the aforementioned Colts and then go on the road 3 straight weeks to Tampa Bay, New Orleans, and a Tennessee team that seems to have their number. Easily, they can go 1-3 in this stretch. Will tickets sell for the Chargers then?

Nope.

But, 2-2 or 3-1 or (don’t jinx ‘em!) 4-0, and the blackout is averted. For one week, at least.

Hope so, because I want to see it on TV. I have kids to feed, I’m not buying Jags tickets. Priorities, donchaknow?

100-year storm in Jacksonville this week.

They’re telling us we just experienced a 100-year storm this past week. The First Coast has been dealing with a N’oreaster that has everything socked in, and the rain has been continuous and heavy. The parking lot of our local Publix is lower than street level, and yesterday morning it was a lake. Streets are flooded, and not just a little. We needed the rain, but we’re at the point of saturation now so new rain just ponds in yards instead of being absorbed into the soil and down to the aquifer.

Unreal.

Stacey put the event to good use, though. We have our eyes on a little neighborhood near the girls’ school for our next house purchase, so she checked it out and the streets were clear, despite surrounding neighborhoods being underwater so badly that residents were stranded. Makes us feel good about that, least. We’re located near the St. Johns River, with lots of creeks and streams cutting up into neighborhoods, so the potential for flood is something to consider in any purchase around here.

I need to go now. There’s ducks at the door, asking to come in and dry off.
